This Medication Ferrous fumarate is used to treat anaemia not enough red blood cells in the blood It is an ironcontaining drug and is sometimes known as an oral iron salt It is used to treat anaemia caused by a deficiency of iron Anaemia is when your blood does not contain enough red blood cells and the symptoms may be tiredness weakness and shortness of breath Ferrous fumarate is a form of iron that can be absorbed and used by the body and works in the same manner as foods containing iron iron is necessary for the normal development of red blood cells as a lack of iron affects the development of the red blood cells and causes iron deficiency anaemia In general this drug is used to treat anaemia because of iron deficiency eg a poor diet or in those who need extra iron such as during pregnancy women with heavy periods following surgery to remove all or part of the stomach gastrectomy patients undergoing dialysis or premature babies Benefits of being on this drug can include increased production of red blood cells and reduction of symptoms associated with anaemia such as weakness and shortness of breath

Antibiotics eg chloramphenicol and tetracycline antibiotics such as tetracycline or doxycycline Antacids eg aluminium hydroxide magnesium carbonate or magnesium trisilicate Penicillamine used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis Colestyramine used to reduce cholesterol and fats in the blood Dimercaprol used to treat poisoning with heavy metals such as mercury or lead
