-: The DBDR has a major responsibility for research to assure the adequacy and safety of the Nation’s blood supply and has a leading role in applying scientific advances in transfusion medicine and stem cell biology to the development of new cell-based therapies to repair and regenerate human tissues and organs.
-: The Blood Diseases Branch supports research and training programs focusing on a wide variety of blood diseases that include sickle cell disease, thalassemia, Fanconi anemia, Diamond-Blackfan anemia and other aplastic anemias as well as outcomes-related research.
-: Research in sickle cell disease and thalassemia ranges from elucidating their etiology and pathophysiology to improving disease treatment and management.
