Main Activity Of Indian Council Of Medical Research

-: Funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India, the ICMR was originally formed in 1911 as the Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA).

-: In 1949, upon the considerable expansion of its scope, the IRFA became the ICMR.

-: Research priorities of the ICMR coincide with national health priorities such as control and management of communicable diseases; fertility control; maternal and child health; control of nutritional disorders; alternative strategies for healthcare delivery; containment within safety limits of environmental and occupational health problems; research on major non-communicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, blindness, diabetes, and other metabolic and hematological disorders; mental health research; and drug research (including traditional remedies).

-: The ICMR conducts intramural research through its national research institutes and regional medical research centres, and supports extramural research through the establishment of centres for advanced research in selected departments of medical colleges, universities, and other non-ICMR research institutes; through task force studies; and through making grants to scientists in non-ICMR research institutes, medical colleges, and universities.
