-: In consultation with the United States Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services, the NIFL servers as a national resource on current, comprehensive literacy research, practice and policy.
-: NIFL was established by the National Literacy Act on 1991 and extended under the Workforce Investment Act.
-: The NIFL defines literacy as an individual’s ability to read, write, speak in English, compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family, and in society.
-: A 10-member advisory board, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, includes prominent individuals from a wide range of groups with a stake in literacy: academic and non-profit institutions; business, industry, and labor; and private foundations.
