Main Activity Of New Mexico Environment Department

-: The NMED is committed to protecting New Mexico’s environment and the health of its citizens by interacting with citizens, regulating industry or running scientific tests on environmental samples.

-: Some of the areas of interest for NMED are: the effects of greenhouse gases and global warming; pollution prevention; recycling; permits for septic tanks; ground water quality; surface water quality; and swimming pools.

-: The NMED’s Border Program works with border communities in southern New Mexico and acts as the main point of contact for border environmental justice issues including Border 2012, the United States-Mexico Environmental Program focusing on reducing air pollution, providing safe drinking water, reducing the risk of exposure to hazardous waste, and ensuring emergency preparedness along the United States-Mexico border.

-: The NMED’s Environmental Justice Tribal Liaison works on statewide environmental justice issues and with New Mexico’s Indian Nations, Pueblos and Tribes on issues including air quality, ground, surface and drinking water quality, solid waste, hazardous waste, training, and outreach.
