Main Activity Of Department Of Fire Services
-: The mission of the DFS is to promote and enhance firefighter safety through policy and training; to assist and support the fire service community in protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Massachusetts; and to provide a presence in the Executive Office of Public Safety in order to direct policy and legislation on all fire related matters.
-: The DFS is the sole agency within state government responsible for overall coordination of fire service policy and operations.
-: By statute, the State Fire Marshal is the head of the department which consists of the following divisions: the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, which provides all fire training to the firefighters of the cities, towns, and fire districts and certification of firefighters; the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which provides public education, investigation, regulation, law enforcement and technical assistance to fire departments, the public, and regulated trades and industries; and Hazardous Materials Response, which oversees the operation of the Hazardous Materials Response Teams throughout the state.
-: Other sections within the DFS include: technical support; fire and explosion investigation section; fire data; licensing; and emergency response.
