Main Activity Of Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance
-: FA is a rare, genetic, neurodegenerative, multi-system, life-shortening disorder.
-: Symptoms, which usually appear between the ages of five and 15, can include muscle weakness and loss of coordination (ataxia) in the arms and legs; vision impairment; hearing loss; and slurred speech; aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine); diabetes mellitus or carbohydrate intolerance; and/or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart).
-: FARA’s mission is to marshal and focus the resources and relationships need to cure FA by raising funds for research, promoting public awareness, and aligning scientists, patients, clinicians, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and other organizations dedicated to curing FA and related diseases.
-: FARA provides research grants; facilitates workshops and the collaborative exchange of information within the scientific community; educates the public, elected representatives, and other government officials; and works cooperatively with government entities and the other organizations that support scientific research aimed at treatments for FA.
