-: The IUCB is a research center of the National Science Foundation.
-: The purpose of IUCB is: to understand the interactions of all that is alive with all that is not; to predict how living cells interact with synthetic materials, and with other cells; and to control the speed and strength of biological surface interactions for the benefit of personal, public, and environmental health.
-: IUCB conducts basic and applied research to control interactions of biomaterials and particles with living cell surfaces in medical, dental, and natural environments.
-: The objectives of the IUCB are: characterization of the surface chemical/physical properties of various synthetic substances that promote or resist bioadhesion in material including the lungs, eyes, mouth, skin, or interior body environments; determination of the surface properties of biofluids (including: blood, tears, and saliva) and cells as they interact with substances, with a focus on the dynamics of media flow, cell arrival and bioattachment mechanisms (as observed in wound healing); documentation of reactions between cells and adjacent cells, films, and surrounding media, and other cross-reactions that promote or prevent bioadhesion in environmental, occupation, or therapeutic situations; and application of these biotechnologies to macrosystem processes like filtration and purification for improved health and comfort.
