-: Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes delay in physical, intellectual, and language development, and is one of the leading cause of mental retardation around the world.
-: The NDSC works to empower its members and all persons with Down syndrome by creating a national climate in which all persons will recognize and embrace the value and dignity of persons with Down syndrome.
-: Additional NDSC objectives are to be a source of information about opportunities and resources that meet individual and family needs; to build a sense of community and fellowship for all persons with Down syndrome; to advocate for appropriate public policy; to encourage ethically responsible research; to educate professionals, parents, and the community; to foster self-advocacy and acknowledge the importance of self-actualization for the person with Down syndrome; to advance the rights of all persons with Down syndrome; to promote full participation of persons with Down syndrome in all aspects of community life; to facilitate a network of state and local groups and affiliates; and to collaborate with other organizations with similar missions.
