Main Activity Of National Seafood Inspection Laboratory
-: The NSIL was established as the Regional Pascagoula Technology Station in 1957 and was reorganized in 1974 to scientifically support the Department of Commerce National Seafood Inspection Program.
-: NSIL supplies information and data pertaining to seafood and aquatic animal health to: DOC/NOAA/NMFS/OSF; other federal agencies; state agencies; academia; industry; media; consumers; and other stakeholders.
-: The NSIL’s Chemical Services Group performs analytical chemical services and/or obtains such services from specialized fishery products testing laboratories as required to support the NSIL’s mission.
-: The Chemical Services Group conducts the following analytical tests on imported and domestic fishery products: methyl mercury; species identification; heavy metals; domoic acid; bisulfites; histamines; chlorinated pesticides; and moisture.
