-: The mission of the NLI is to create an enduring legacy of national land in Northern Illinois for people, plants and animals.
-: The NLI accepts donations of properties; buys lands; manages natural areas; and helps landowners establish legal agreements that permanently limit harmful use and development.
-: The NLI’s programs include five main categories: acquiring and protecting natural areas; managing, protecting, and restoring natural areas and native species; conducting research and managing information; disseminating information about land and nature conservation; and developing sound public policies and plans.
-: Interests of the NLI include the Mississippi River blufflands; endangered and threatened animal and plant species of Northwestern Illinois; floodplains; wetlands; river corridors; prairies; and forests.
