-: OHMS is the federal safety authority for ensuring the safe transport of hazardous materials (hazmat) by air, rail, highway, and water with the exception of bulk transportation of hazmat by vessel.
-: OHMS promulgate a national safety program that minimizes the risks to life and property inherent in commercial transportation of hazmat.
-: The functions of OHMS can be consolidated into six categories: evaluating safety risks; developing and enforcing standards for transporting hazmat; educating shippers and carries; investigating hazmat incidents and failures; conducting research; and providing grants to improve emergency response to incidents.
-: In addition, OHMS works with other DOT operating administrations to help them administer hazmat safety programs effectively.
